This is a swimming pool in my residential compound. What could be better than go swimming and splashing at the end of an endless South China summer day, you think.
I never dip as little as a tip of my toe in it. Not even once.
Yesterday I met a neighbour, a nice Chinese guy of about 30. He was heading home in his swimming trunks and a towel was hanging over his shoulder.
- Why I never see you in the pool, he asked me.
- Because I never go there.
- But why the hell?
- Because your compatriots spit and piss into the pool, I said. We are pretty straight, he is a nice man, no need to be too sweet with him.
- So why give a fuck? Piss there as well. I do.
